Worldwide sales of gigabit passive optical network (GPON) equipment will break the US$1 billion mark this year and reach US$4.7 billion in 2011, making GPON one of the fastest-growing technologies in the telecom sector over the next five years, according to the latest report from Light Reading Insider, a paid research service of Light Reading

GPON Market Forecast: The Horizon Beyond Verizon, explores and analyzes the emerging GPON sector including a five-year global market forecast for GPON equipment.

It provides an overview of the PON taxonomy, focusing on the relative strengths and weaknesses of GPON and EPON options. GPON standardization efforts by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) group are evaluated.

Alcatel-Lucent has taken the early lead in the GPON market by securing significant deals with Tier 1 carriers Verizon and France Telecom, but there’s still plenty of opportunity for competitors to catch up, Sherrington says: With many vendors expecting the market to be dominated by four or five players, early success may be critical to capturing the biggest chunks of that market share.
